The communique which emanated from the recent G7 summit commits the G7 member countries to achieving net zero emissions, no later than 2050. It also pledges to halving emissions by 2030. If actions follow these ambitions, it is a step in the right direction.

The G7 recognises climate change as one of the key risks to the global economy. The G7 has also promised to chart a “G7 pathway towards net zero economies”. However, all these commitments need to be supported by “tangible actions in all sectors in our economies and societies”. The group has also promised billions of investments in the Green Climate fund, which it hopes in turn will mobilise billions in private investment also.

A very important line in this communique is that the G7 recognises “the need for an urgent step in the deployment of renewable heating and cooling and a reduction in energy demand”. It also supports SEAD’s (Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment) initiatives of doubling the efficiency of refrigeration systems globally by 2030.
