Novum welcomes and commends the 426 out of 587 MEP’s who had the bravery and foresight to do what is right by our planet in regards voting to phase out climate damaging HFC’s and HFO’s.
Novum is also very proud to be one of the founding companies of the Clean Cooling Coalition, under the stewardship of Marc Chasserot. The Clean Cooling Coalition promotes decarbonising the heating and cooling sectors in order to counteract climate change. This includes the urgent need to phase out HFC’s, which are responsible for huge GHG emissions, which is a major contributor to global warming.
The banning of HFC’s is a fantastic achievement and the culmination of many years work by Clean Cooling Coalition members. But this is not the final phase in the process, this European parliament position on banning HFC’s is a significant step in forming an agreement between the parliament, the commission and the European Council, which is expected pre-summer 2023.
The approved amendment 145 and 153 in Annex 4 bans “Stationary refrigeration equipment that contains, or whose functioning relies upon, fluorinated greenhouse gases”. This ban will take effect on January 1st, 2027.
The two natural refrigerant solutions to HFC installations are either CO² remote systems or Novum’s patented LEAP™ technology.
Replacing F-gas with natural refrigerants only tackles part of the problem: 75% of cooling emissions come from energy consumption rather than refrigerant leaks, according to a well-regarded UK study. Therefore, retailers have a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop refrigeration strategies and choose system architecture that will future proof their businesses. Novum’s Panama range are the only Energy Star approved supermarket size freezers on the global market. This is due to their ultra-low energy consumption.
“With the “Big Switch” to LEAP™, we are experiencing serious players in retailing across the globe adopting LEAP™ technology.
They are now taking on LEAP™ technology as a competitive, innovative full store plugin solution, making it the only viable alternative to CO2 systems.”
