- Global supermarkets can save up to 70% in energy usage when compared to remote systems
- LEAP™ upright cabinets launched as the first viable large-scale plug-in alternative to remote systems
- Novums new refrigeration leasing scheme puts money back in supermarkets pockets
Novum, in association with Schweitzer store designers, Northwest supermarkets and ATMOsphere hosted over 60 guests from across Europe’s supermarket sector, at a webinar focussed on taking back control of spiralling energy costs
Novum is recognised as having the most sustainable and energy efficient freezers on the global market.
The launch of Novums new LEAP™ technology enabled upright range means that for the first time, supermarkets with energy guzzling traditional remote systems, have a viable plug-in solution alternative with LEAP™ technology. This ultra-low energy, low noise, low heat rejection, maintenance free solution can be installed at scale overnight with minimal disruption. This means that supermarkets could slash their electricity bills overnight, saving up to 70% in energy costs, not to mention much lower CAPEX costs.

Northwest’s Bob Krawchuk was the first adopter of the LEAP™ enabled upright, Panama Green.
“Being that we deal in the high Arctic of Canada, the far Arctic of Alaska, a lot of the small villages in Alaska, when you put a refrigeration system in there the key thing now is a what’s the flight schedules to get a technician that’s bullet tight qualified to work on refrigeration there. The cost of the flights are expensive.”
In regards failed compressors “the high costs of flights and labour associated with a compressor can be anything between $15,000 and $20,000. The nice thing with the Panama Green is you have the cassette. And if you got a three door Panama green, you got three cassettes. It takes about 15-20 minutes to change the cassette. We usually keep cassettes on site. It takes them like 15 minutes to change it out and you’re back in business with no loss of sales or of product. This can be done by an electrician or a handy-Andy”
In regards to energy savings with two initial pilot projects “energy consumption was greatly reduced by switching to the Panama green over a traditional self-contained unit or conventional unit.”
“Each door is only using less than six kilowatts per day including light”
Eoin Lennon, Head of Technology, and Innovation demonstrated additional benefits of Panama Green, which included the use of only natural environmentally friendly refrigerant, ultra-low noise (between 46 and 49dB), combined with a cassette system which is virtually maintenance free. Mr. Lennon explained how this plug and play system maintains the seamless multiplex look of your remote system and can be easily switched out overnight.

LEAP™ consistently outperforms alternative CO² remote systems in terms of energy savings in all climates.
LEAP™ is not, unlike CO², affected by low transcritical point, where any energy efficiencies are greatly reduced at condensing temperatures above 31°C (which translates into real ambient temperatures of only low to mid-twenties), resulting in drastically reduced efficiency and higher energy costs.

Nathan Watts and Damjan Zalokar of Schweitzer explained how their unique flexi store design complements Novum’s plug-in LEAP™ technology in terms of flexibility and additional energy savings. They also explained how with new modern store formats, flexibility is key in terms of energising the customer with new experiences.
Marc Chasserot of ATMOsphere told of how F-Gas regulations are currently with the European parliament and he expects new regulations in 2023 and implementation to follow in 2024. He also predicts that the next market to follow in regards F-Gas legislation will be the US market. Marc also emphasised that LEAP™ technology is “very well placed to leverage the huge market growth” caused by the phasing out of harmful F-Gas refrigerants.

“We are living in unprecedented times, in terms of war, an energy crisis, climate change and the Covid pandemic, inflation and cost of living crisis – these represents a perfect storm of unprecedented disruption, and volatility across the globe.”
“LEAP is the only plug-in technology in the market that can be installed at scale with low noise, low heat rejection and low energy consumption and can be adopted overnight, with supermarket scale pack out, replacing the need for CO² systems. This technology is achieving up to 70% energy efficiency when compared to remote systems
Novum has also introduced an innovative lease financing option for supermarkets who wish to keep cash in their pockets and spread the CAPEX upgrade spend over a number of years. In essence this amounts to a “free upgrade” as the value of energy saved currently will exceed the annual leasing costs. This will help supermarkets to adopt the LEAP™ solution and avail overnight of energy savings of up to 70%.”
