US Frozen Food Sales Soar

The incredible sales surge at groceries around the world has led to and magnified buying patterns which will remain with us in a post-COVID marketplace.

On-Line ordering, curbside pick-up and self-checkout were all developing concepts, but with a surge in business between 25%-100% for some retailers, newer, unanticipated trends have emerged.

Frozen food sales in the United States have grown by almost 80% and Europe, which already had higher sales than the US saw an uptick averaging 40%. (Source: American Frozen Food Institute & Frozen Food Europe).

Sure, there are some goodies in there like pizza and cookie dough, but sales of frozen vegetables, meat and seafood skyrocketed, as well.

Retailers are learning in real time how to repurpose floor space to accommodate new customer behavior, particularly in communities where the “restaurant dollar” is going to be spent on food to be prepared at home.

In addition, we may continue to see a shift away from unpackaged produce to “fresh frozen” fruits and vegetables as consumers become wise to advancements in the technology we refer to as nature’s “pause button”.

This increase in frozen food sales is a positive outcome of changing consumer behavior which will significantly reduce waste in the entire “farm to table” stream and continue to provide high levels of nutritional value.
